Oasis Restaurant at Lake Travis Starts Over After Fire
This is kind of sad. This was the place where me and Honey had our first date. It was also the place we went for our recent anniversary. But in good news, I think I heard recently that the Oasis has reopened already, but are still rebuilding in the process.
From K*Eye News:
Workers at The Oasis restaurant on Lake Travis will learn a little more about what the future holds after Wednesday’s fire.
The landmark club employs 280 workers. Owners have told workers they will have jobs when the Oasis rebuilds.
Some employees were put to work immediately after the fire. They helped clear rubble and salvage the antiques that used to decorate The Oasis courtyard.
Myron Tucker’s been the head cook at The Oasis for six years. He says he’s been assured he won’t lose his job. He says, “Everybody’s still working. You might have to hang in there, or come up here and help clean, or get another job for awhile, but nobody is fired.”
It’s not clear yet how long rebuilding will take. The Oasis will have to adjust to current specifications and firecodes, which are quite different from those in place 25 years ago when it opened.
Fire crews were on the scene late into the night Wednesday keeping watch ! for hot spots. A lightning strike caused the fire. Owners estimate the damage to the buildings and the 500 acre site at one million dollars.
At the peak of the fire, 55 firefighters from 3 different fire departments were called in. It’s not clear how soon the oasis can rebuild.
The Oasis has been at Lake Travis for more than 25 years and has become a Central Texas institution. It has 40 outside decks and can hold 2000 people.
Popular for weddings, graduations, and tourists looking for scenic sunset photos, The Oasis also has an antique store, The Treasury, on site. It also burned.
Firefighters from Hudson Bend, Austin, and Jollyville Fire Departments responded, making it a three alarm fire.
Firefighters say the fire didn’t injure anyone as it moved up the hill and posed no threat to any homes in the area.
